Planning a maternity photoshoot can feel a little overwhelming, between figuring out what to bring with you and how to dress, the process becomes a bit daunting. Below, I have put together a maternity photoshoot checklist for you, to read through before your maternity shoot with me.

Show as much, or as little skin as you like

Keeping it simple and showing that beautiful bump of yours is what it’s all about. Having the right underwear (that you’re comfortable in) will really help us create incredible pregnancy portraits for you. I have a number of gowns available for you to use during your photo shoot, all of which look amazing on you. I suggest bringing underwear in multiple colors, to make the most of the studio wardrobe. This is a must-have item to add to your maternity photoshoot checklist. If you’d rather not show much skin, that’s fine too. This is your shoot and you decide what you’re comfortable with.

A white shirt is a classic

If in doubt about what to wear, bring along an oversized white shirt. You can pair this with underwear (maybe even Calvin Klein) and/or a pair of jeans. This look will never age or go out of style, it was great 10 years ago and 10 years from now it will be just as timeless. We can button it all the way up, or keep it open to show a bit more skin. Whatever you are comfortable with.

All the family is welcome

Partners and children are more than welcome to come along to the photoshoot. I actually believe that having them there helps to tell your story better. Partners may feel a little uneasy coming along, but rest assured the photoshoot isn’t about them, it’s about you. They are more of the background prop, so feel free to tell them this if it helps get them along!

Check the studio wardrobe

I have an extensive wardrobe at the studio, full of dresses, materials and sets that are perfect for you to wear for your maternity photoshoot. They are all listed on my private Instagram page, with sizing and multiple images so you can see what you’d like to borrow before you even arrive at your shoot. I suggest bringing a few outfits for yourself, but you are welcome to wear anything I have at the studio for the duration of your session.

Outside VS Inside

If you happen to be pregnant from Spring to Autumn, you may want to consider an outdoor photoshoot. These can be very different from an indoor, studio maternity photoshoot. The colours, space, and overall feel of the images are not the same, it is also a very seasonal photoshoot meaning it is not suitable for winter time. If you would prefer to reveal more skin during your session, you may want to opt for a studio based maternity photoshoot, that way it is a little more private.

The most important thing on your maternity photoshoot checklist: Enjoy yourself!

If you’re feeling nervous about being in front of the camera or unsure whether your toddler will ‘behave’, please don’t worry. I always recommend not putting too much pressure on yourself or others, it’s important to relax and be as natural as possible. I have no expectations when it comes to toddlers during a photoshoot, I will photograph them as they are and let their personalities shine through.

There you have it, my Pregnancy Photoshoot checklist. I hope you have found this useful when preparing for your maternity photoshoot.

We have a full studio wardrobe you are more than welcome to use during your photoshoot. However, if you’d rather bring your own, I have some suggestions of places to shop below.

Best places to shop for your maternity photoshoot:
